Senator Sam Brownback Visited Gordeme Garden
The Senator of United States, Sam Brownback
visited one of the urban agriculture program sites of WeSMCO found
at Gordeme in Piazza, Addis Ababa on Friday January 12, 2007.
After observing the garden and a friendly discussion with the
beneficiaries, Senator Sam expressed that the program is promising
and should be encouraged. With the financial aid from USAID, granted
through DAI/ECI-Africa, WeSMCO started Urban Agriculture program
in December 2004 with the objective of introducing nutritional
garden among HIV/AIDS affected women, orphans and vulnerable children
residing in urban areas to feed their family and generate income
from the surplus production. The project contains three parts
of activities namely: communal gardening, household gardening
which is cultivated in the small plots of land to be found at
the backyard of the beneficiaries and container gardening for
those who can not afford any piece of land. The project
provided the beneficiaries with drip kit system, seeds and seedlings,
fencing materials, farming tools, training and technical support.
The whole gardening depends on organic methods and clean tap water.
The contribution of the program to the environmental protection
and sanitation is immense as it is being vivid from the experiences
of WeSMCO. While the Senator was having discussions on the field,
one of the beneficiaries of Gordeme garden, w/o Worke Mekuanent
said “previously this area (Gordeme) was dumping area of
wastes and a hiding place for druggists and criminals but now
thanks for WeSMCO it became clean and a place where we make our
living”. Currently the organization is implementing the
third phase of the project after having completed successfully
the previous two projects which have totally benefited more than
1,080 people residing in the area. |
