Focus on vulnerable children for the millennium!


WeSMCO celebrating its 10th anniversary

1. Executive Summary

WeSMCO intends to celebrate 10 years of service to the community under the motto: Focus on vulnerable children for the millennium; from September 06- 08, 2007 with various events.

The aim of the celebration is to raise further awareness on the difficulties of vulnerability. It also wishes to acknowledge and thank all our donors, members, partners and sponsors for their valuable support to the organization and its beneficiaries.

It is a day of celebration but also a day of advocacy throughout the community. As a ten year celebration and also in recognition of the new millennium, WeSMCO will use this opportunity to provide many of those affected by streetism with new income generating opportunities and also to raise much needed funds to continue our work.

The day will be carried out with awareness raising and advocacy among the general public through activities where all members of society will participate. These activities are to include car washing, shoe shining, distribution of materials among vulnerable and needy children to provide an opportunity for income generation, distribution of clothing and shoes among vulnerable and needy children, and a provision of entertainment to include food, drink, music and an exhibition of our work to date.

2. Organizational Profile

WeSMCO is an indigenous, non-governmental, non-profit making, humanitarian organization established in 1997 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by a group of dedicated individuals from diverse social, economic and religious backgrounds. The organization is officially recognized and registered at the Ministry of Justice under registration number 268. It is directly accountable to the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency of Ethiopia. WeSMCO is currently working with local communities in different parts of the country where social services are scantily available. WeSMCO has been dedicated to improve the living standards of Ethiopian society focusing on destitute mothers and children. 

For the last ten years, WeSMCO has handled almost fifty seven projects, where 50 have been completed successfully and the remaining seven are under execution/on-going or near to completion. Its major programs are: Family and Community based Child Care and Support Program, Health Program, Women Empowerment, Gender Equity and Good Governance Program, Agriculture and Environmental Protection Program and Skill Training Program.

In recognition of its outstanding achievements, WeSMCO has received many testimonials, certificates, appreciation letters and cups from various organizations and government bodies that include: USAID/ECI Africa recognition award and Addis Ababa City Administration Green Award Program – 2006. Additionally, WeSMCO has received a number of appreciation letters from donor agencies and government offices expressing their satisfaction with our performance.

The major sponsors of these projects are; The British Embassy, CIDA / Canada, CRDA, ESRDF, CORD AID/ The Netherlands, The Norwegian Embassy, SAHA, CRS, Ipas Ethiopia, BOLSA UNICEF, Japan Embassy, NCAS, GOAL Ethiopia, Belgian Technical Cooperation, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, GTZ, SKN, The Netherlands, Irish Aid, World Bank/ FOAA, WFP,  ERIS, Pathfinder International-Ethiopia, ECI Africa, Ethio-German Association, Methodist Relief and Development Fund, and Dan Church Aid.

WeSMCO is an active member of CRDA, CORHA and NEWA, which are prominent umbrella and networking organizations.

3. Purpose of the celebration

1. To express our gratitude to all our donors;
2. To advocate the issues of tackling streetism in the new millennium of Ethiopian;
3. To further raise awareness of the community on streetism.
4. To review the impact of the programs of WeSMCO and put in place future direction.

4. Activities of the event:

1. Organizing fundraising event.

2. Show the improtance of voluntarism by involving volunteers in fundraising events

3. Contact different volunteers and offer them to participate in the fundraising events

4. Collection of old clothes

5. Contact schools, colleges and individuals with view to collect clothes and shoes that can be redistributed among the street children. The idea behind this is that peoples want to help and assist the vulnerable parts of the community if the access is available/ created. 

6. Contact companies for in kind and cash donation

7.Contact different companies to get different kinds of donations like t-shirts from the garment companies, beverage and food supply from beverage and food factories for the day and different in kind and cash donation from different companies and individuals.

9. Contact potential sponsors that can sponsor the event or parts of the event. This could be cash or in kind.

11. Contact the TV, Radio and press services to broad cast or publicize the event. 

12. Contact bands for live music on the day

13. Contact bands to prepare street party for everybody to enjoy. 

14. Prepare lunch ceremony

15. Prepare Exhibition

16. Organize and document exhibition that depicts the ten years work of the organization though different photos, films and other materials.
